Dance Angels

What are Dance Angels?

Social dancing is a unique experience, and for a new dancer, their first social dance can be scary! It’s less scary when you have a friend who’s already part of the community, and that’s where our Dance Angels come in. Dance Angels are experienced community members who find joy in welcoming new dancers to the scene. They spend the first thirty minutes of social dance time dancing and chatting with our newest friends. If you’re ever feeling nervous, scared, shy, or any other emotion about getting out on the floor, just find a Dance Angel! They’re also great to talk to if you have questions about dance etiquette, shoes, or anything else (dance-related) that you can think of. To find a Dance Angel, look for dancers wearing a white bandana.

Why Dance Angels?

The idea for Dance Angels came from the Boston Swing Central volunteer program as well as a dear friend and beloved community member who passed away in 2020 from bile duct cancer. Angel Figueroa was legendary for both his skills and his generosity as a dancer. When he went out social dancing, Angel made it a point to dance with everyone there, regardless of skill level. For many dancers in Boston and around the country, he was the first professional dancer they ever shared a dance with! While Angel can no longer be with us physically, our Dance Angels bring a little bit of his spirit back to Wednesday nights.

“The partner you have is the partner you want. The song you get is your favorite song. If you miss the break, don’t worry, another one is coming.”
